Month of October 2024
Dear Parents/Guardians,
September was a whirlwind, and I can't believe October is already here. During September, students learned about conflict resolution, the size of a problem, the choices to make when solving small problems, who helps us when we have a big problem, and how to respectfully solve conflict. We practiced the use of "I-Statements" when solving conflict. "I feel___ when___, next time could you___." These statements take the blame out and peacefully reflect what we need and how we feel now.
Additionally, students have been learning and actively applying Kelso's Wheel in their daily lives. This practical tool helps students solve small problems that may arise during our days. The Kelso's Wheel handout is available below; it is the third link under additional parent resources.
Lastly, we've also introduced the Zones of Regulation. Students are learning about emotional literacy and how to be an emotion detective. Our Zones are broken down into four easy colors to remember: Red (anger), Green (happy), Yellow (anxious or excited), and Blue (sadness). I'm pleased to share that students have been actively practicing checking in with their Zones, showing great progress!
In October, we will continue discussing the Zones of Regulation and what needs to be in our toolbox when coping in a Zone. For example, I may need a break and practice deep breathing when I'm in the Red Zone or need a drink of water and stretch when I'm in the Blue Zone.
Additionally, we will start our Anti-Bullying unit, which will cover the different roles people take in bullying situations, what bullying is, and what to do when it happens.
Lastly, we will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week from October 23rd-31st. During the week of Red Ribbon, we will be discussing healthy choices, saying no to drugs and alcohol, saying no to peer pressure, and how to make safe and healthy choices in our everyday lives.
