WHY SCHOOL COUNSELING?
The elementary and middle school years are when students begin to develop their academic self-concept and feelings of competence and confidence as learners. They are starting to develop decision-making, communication, social skills, and character values. It is also a time when students develop thoughts towards school, self, peers, social groups, and family.

What is a School Counseling Program?
School counselors work to maximize student success, promoting access and equity for all students. As vital school leadership team members, school counselors create a school culture of success for all.

Who are School Counselors? (Vs. Guidance counselor)
School counselors are certified or licensed educators who enhance student success by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program focusing on three domains: academics, career, and social-emotional.
Previously, counselors working in schools were called "guidance counselors." However, as the scope of their duties has changed and evolved, the term has been updated to "school counselors." While some schools still use the outdated "guidance counselor" term, the American School Counselor Association encourages using "school counselor" to more accurately reflect the role.
